The hidden dangers of diet sodas

Do you drink diet sodas with the intention that your waist line won’t expand?  Well, it turns out that diet sodas may actually have the opposite effect.  This is the conclusion of Professor Helen Hazuda, of the University of Texas’s health science center.   “Diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may foster a sweet tooth, distort appetite and even damage key brain cells” and can make you fat says  Professor Hazuda.   Professor Hazuda examined the health and habits of 474 adults for  nine and a half years.  She then compared the growth in waistline of those who consumed diet drinks with others who only drank regular soft drinks  Overall, those who drank diet drinks saw their waists expand 70 per cent faster compared to those who drank regular soft drinks.  But those who drank 2 or more cans of diet sodas saw a 500 percent greater increase in girth.   What is a possible reason? The artificial sweetener may produce a zero calorie drink but it causes people to crave sweets food thus increasing the total calories which translates to weight gain.
