Natural Treatments for Asthma

If you are suffering from asthma and are afraid of the side effects of asthma medications, there are natural treatments for asthma.  Asthma is condition in which the airways are in a spastic, inflamed  state reducing the intake of air.   It is characterized by symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness and excessive phlegm production.   There are medicines that can relax the airways but there are side effects such as weight gain, and immune system suppression.   Natural treatments focus on providing the body with nutrients to support proper lung functioning.  So what are some of these natural treatments?

1. Hydration – Drinking water can help asthmatics because it can decrease the amount of histamine in the body.    Elevated histamine can contribute to bronchial tube constriction.  This is an issue especially in people who exercise and develop asthma.  By staying hydrated before exercising, this type of asthma can be reduced.

2. Eat more magnesium rich foods  Magnesium is a natural substance that can dilate airways.  Source of magnesium includes nuts, and leafy greens.

3.  Fish oil – Fish oil contains a type of omega 3 fatty acid that can reduce inflammation.  EPA, a type of omega 3 fatty acid stimulates the production of a certain type of prostaglandins to reduce inflammation.

5. Acupuncture – Acupuncture points on certain energetic highways in the body can strengthen lung function as well as effect the nervous system to relax the airways.
