How meditation helps stress?

Meditation has been around for several thousand of years.   This ancient art of focusing the mind has been known to benefit a variety of medical related conditions such as stress and pain.   But it has never  been clear how meditation helps stress.  Without a credible scientific explanation, mediation has been equated to nothing more than “something in the mind.”  Well, recently, researchers at Harvard and MIT may have come up with a plausible explanation.   It turns out that the key to mediation may in fact be in the mind – specifically the brain waves.  They studied a group of people who meditate and measured their brain activity during meditation.    What these researches found is that when one meditates, this produces alpha brain waves which are associated with feeling calm and less stress.   How do alpha brain waves result in a euphoric mood? Alpha brain waves are also known to effect the sensory cortex of the brain.  This is the part of the brain that process any type of sensory information.  When someone is very anxious, their sensory cortex is overwhelmed and this leads to not being able to think clearly and more anxiety.    It turns out that alpha brain waves can suppress sensory and/or distracting sensory information thus helping with stress and keeping the mind focus.
