Are you getting enough fiber in your diet? Benefits of fiber

Are you getting enough fiber in your diet? It is recommended that people should eat approximately 25 grams of fiber each day.  What are the benefits of fiber?

Fiber impacts health in many ways.  First, everone knows that fiber helps prevent constipation.  But how does this improve health?  Fiber reduces the buildup of toxic compounds in the colon and this can reduce the risk of colon cancer.  Secondly, fiber helps control blood sugar and improve diabetes.  How is this possible? Fiber acts like a mesh and slows the absorption of sugar into blood.  This in turn prevents rapid elevations of insulin and thus is beneficial to diabetes.  Thirdly, fiber also helps one to control their appetite by increasing satiety, the feeling of fullness.  This is because fiber causes stomach distention which signals the brain that satiety has been achieved.  Finally, fiber is beneficial in reducing cholesterol.  Fiber stimulates the liver to dump more of the bad cholesterol into the colon.
