It seems these days many grocery stores, and restaurants are selling food that has “100% no trans fats”. Now, at a first glance, selling food that is labelled as containing no trans fats appears to be a healthy change in the food industry. But, this is actually misleading to the average consumer. Why is this?
Certain trans fats occur naturally in the body but the majority of trans fats are actually made when oils are cooked at high heat. This means any food that is deep fried contains trans fats. And what is the big deal about trans fats? Well eating deep, fried food means the majority of your cells contain trans fats and trans fats make cells stiffer and can increase heart disease.
So while it is true that restaurants and grocery stores do not use trans fats, their foods actually contain trans fats because their foods are cooked in oil at high temperatures.
